Ownership Review
Ownership Review
Verify the ownership documents of all assets, including real estate, along with any designations of beneficiaries. Consider carefully how each would be controlled in case of disability or death. Modify as appropriate and keep this list current and its location known to the key parties. Do not overlook electronic assets, like computer files, access codes, automated payments, subscriptions, and passwords. Provide also for the nonavailability of your personal computer.
This is probably something everybody should have been doing all their lives, but few have. Now, it takes on additional importance. This should probably be the first step in basic estate planning, but in our case, we are interested in 3 aspects of ownership: various eligibilities, control during incapacity of the owner, and beneficiaries.
Getting Started
Begin your list with the largest (physically or value) and continue to the smallest. Assign realistic values, even if you cannot see just how that value might be realized. You may have access to an inventory form useful for this purpose.
Some Insights
Recently-publicized losses of high value crypto-currency codes have reinforced the absolute necessity of collecting and protecting the ownership information, including who has access and control. To lose wealth accidentally feels inexcusable. And losing accessibility when needed is almost as bad.
